When searching for riverfront property in the Charleston area, buyers need to decide early on which they prefer-salt water or fresh water. There are advantages to each. While many area rivers such as the Ashley and Cooper Rivers are freshwater rivers at a point somewhere upriver, others like the Wando River, are saltwater for their entire length. If for instance, you knew that you wanted to be on a fresh water river, you could eliminate the Wando straight away.
So what are some of the advantages to salt water rivers. Well, for one thing, if you expect to be boating to the intercoastal or to the ocean, you would have a lot further to go from a freshwater property. The fishing is certainly different with larger fish found closer to ocean waters. Also, if shrimping and crabbing are on your “to do” list, you would certainly need to be on saltwater.
On the other hand, many people point to the onerous task of cleaning your boat and flushing your engine every time you take it out in salt water. Freshwater rivers are also hard to beat for swimming. It’s very refreshing to swim and not be “sticky” when you come out. Alligators do occasionally eat wayward dogs that are swimming in freshwater rivers though, so dog lovers should be aware!
